We recently reviewed SilverStone's SG05 small form factor case which is so compact that a typical optical drive will not fit inside. The enclosure is designed to use a slim drive like the SilverStone SOD01. This drive is by Panasonic which has an excellent reputation in the optical drive industry. The SOD01 is a SATA combo DVD drive that supports DVD/CD reads and writes. The drive is a slot loaded model that will fit nicely with the compact nature of the case it will be installed into. With the ability to perform the functions of a full sized drive, we won't be missing anything by going with a slim model. To see more pictures of the drive and what it looks like in the SFF case, check out the full SG05 review.

SilverStone SOD01 Slim DVD Combo Drive

The need for small form factor accessories shows no signs of stopping. The SFF market is one of the fastest growing segments at this time, so expect to see more companies offer compact models of popular products. The performance of these small devices continue to surprise us, especially when we are used to performance systems needing large cases, PSU's and video cards. There has never been a better time to build a custom SFF PC. If you have a need for a slim DVD drive, we highly recommend the SOD01. The drive runs quiet and does everything it needs to do. It may not be the fastest drive out there, but there are compromises involved to provide these features in a package this small. MSRP on the SOD01 is $89.

Packaging

Conclusion

The outer packaging is simple, a plain brown box with some description of the contents. The drive is protected well inside the small box. The drive arrived in perfect condition.

Accessories

The drive is packaged with a compact SATA power and data cable. The cable needs to be plugged into a molex power cable on the PSU. The drive also comes with some tiny screws for mounting it into the case. Our drive included a spare set of screws (for a total of eight). A user manual is also included.

Exterior

The SOD01 is a Panasonic model UJ875A combo DVD/CD drive. The read speeds are 8x for DVD-ROM and 24x for CD-ROM. Write speeds are DVD-RAM 5x, DVD±R 8x (SL) 6x (DL), DVD-RW 6x, DVD+RW 8x;
CD-R 24x, CD-RW 24x. The drive comes in either black or white to match most systems. We did not go into detailed testing for actual read/write speeds, but the drive was easy to install and performed well.
